Primary objective
Provide culturally safe and responsive primary healthcare practice to Aboriginal and Torres Strait people and their families through the
provision of treatment of illness, prevention, early detection, early intervention and promoting well-being.
Context statement
The Aboriginal Health Practitioner classification level AHP2 is an experienced practitioner. It requires the occupant to operate with a level
of independence against a specific set of rules and procedures set by the health service provider. This level is also considered appropriate
for experienced practitioners re-entering the clinical workforce and requiring upskilling and recently of practice. And will be required to
assist with gathering data for research to improve services and make decisions based on evidence. This position will be located within the
Orthopaedic and Rehabilitation Ward at the Alice Springs Hospital
Key duties and responsibilities
1. Provide a culturally safe and responsive healthcare service for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and their families, within a
defined scope of practice and in accordance with their healthcare plans.
2. Support clients to access and navigate the health system, ensuring continuity of care across the healthcare continuum.
3. Engage with local community members to strengthen community involvement in health service delivery.
4. In partnership with other health professionals provide health education and promotion programs in the community.
5. Provide mentoring and support to new graduates and trainees including local workplace induction and orientation.
6. Provide practice and cultural support to other health professionals to build cultural safety and assist them to navigate Aboriginal values,
beliefs, and community protocols.
7. Follow defined service quality standards, work health and safety policies and procedures relating to the work being undertaken in
order to ensure high quality, safe services, and workplaces.
Selection criteria
Essential
1. Current registration with Ahpra as an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander Health Practitioner.
2. Minimum AQF level 4 as per NTPS Aboriginal Health Practitioner 2022-2025 Enterprise Agreement and/or learning agreement
demonstrating a commitment to achieve this.
3. Proven minimum 2 years’ experience employed as a registered Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander Health Practitioner in a health
care environment with experience and knowledge of health information systems used; in particular, patient care systems; and data
collection.
4. Demonstrated local Aboriginal cultural knowledge, respect, and safety at the individual and families’ levels; maintaining appropriate
confidentiality; and effective communication ensuring informed consent.
5. Ability to self-manage within a multi-disciplinary health team and provide primary health care services against national health care
standards in a culturally safe and respectful manner.
