Located in North Melbourne near the Royal Melbourne Hospital, we are proud to be a go-to destination for families, food lovers, and health-conscious diners alike. As we continue to grow, we are seeking a skilled Chef to lead our kitchen and uphold the high standards our guests have come to expect.

Key Responsibilities

As a Chef at Gai Wong, your core duties will include:

  • Designing and updating menus, including seasonal offerings and new dishes aligned with our Southeast Asian theme

  • Managing overall kitchen operations, ensuring smooth workflow, food quality, and compliance with food safety regulations

  • Inspecting ingredients for freshness, quality, and consistency before preparation

  • Preparing, cooking, and seasoning food according to house standards and authentic Southeast Asian recipes

  • Operating and maintaining cooking equipment (e.g. ovens, fryers, steamers) at optimal performance

  • Accurately portioning and presenting dishes with attention to detail, garnishing, and plating aesthetics

  • Ensuring proper storage of ingredients and prepared items in temperature-controlled environments

  • Preparing meals that cater to special dietary requirements where necessary

  • Supervising and mentoring kitchen staff, delegating tasks, and supporting a team-oriented environment

  • Maintaining hygiene and cleanliness standards throughout all kitchen operations

  • Contributing to cost control by minimizing food wastage and optimizing ingredient usage

  • Demonstrates high attention to detail, especially in food presentation and consistency

  • Is flexible to work evenings, weekends, and public holidays as required
