The Role

This position involves providing intensive case work and direct support to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women and children who are victim survivors of family violence. This position works in conjunction with families and other case workers to achieve positive outcomes and minimize risk.

The service uses assertive outreach strategies to engage women and children to support them to increase safety in the home, in community, and to link into relevant therapeutic services to support healing from family violence related trauma. This is supported by ongoing risk assessment and safety planning with parents and carers to enhance their safety and that of other children living in the family home.

Further intended outcomes include a reduction in the severity or cessation of family violence, increased safety and stability and improved emotional health and wellbeing for victim survivors.

About you

  • Knowledge of safe and appropriate culturally centred practices for Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander focused services, including employment of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander people

  • Demonstrated understanding of social, physical, economical, and cultural strengths and challenges affecting Aboriginal communities and their ability to access adequate and quality services

  • Understanding of the purpose and expectations of the Victorian Child Safe Standards and demonstrated commitment to contributing to a child safe organisation in both practice and culture

  • Bachelor of Social Work or equivalent qualification, and /or experience in line with the mandatory minimum qualification requirements for specialist family violence practitioners

  • Understanding of the purpose and expectations of the Victorian Child Safe Standards and demonstrated commitment to contributing to a child safe organisation in both practice and culture.

  • Demonstrated ability as a practitioner in the family violence and child, youth and family welfare field

  • Proven ability to engage women and children and flexibly provide outreach services, sometimes in a challenging context

  • Proven ability to work collaboratively with women and children in conducting needs assessments and support plans, risk assessments and safety planning

  • An understanding of the MARAM (Multi-Agency Risk Assessment and Management) framework, the Family Violence Act (2008) and the Child Youth and Family Act (2005)

  • Demonstrated organisational and time management skills.

  • Computer literacy

  • Excellent interpersonal skills with ability to develop positive stakeholder relationships and communicate with diverse individuals in a culturally appropriate manner.

  • Ability to demonstrate resilience and work in challenging and high-pressured environments.

  • Strong written communication skills including a high level of accuracy, record keeping, and report writing abilities.

  • Ability to work effectively and cooperatively as part of a team and follow processes.

Desirable

  • Identify as Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander

  • Demonstrated experience working with Aboriginal Community Controlled Organisations
