ABOUT THE BRANCH
Legal & Assurance Branch partners with business areas in the Department of Finance to provide high quality legal, governance and assurance services.
  • Public Law is responsible for providing strategic legal advice on statutory interpretation; administrative law; employment law matters; Freedom of Information (FOI); strategic legal advice on information requests (including responding to third-party information requests and Royal Commissions); coordinating the privacy function; and legislation liaison.
  • Commercial Law is responsible for providing strategic commercial and corporate legal advice, drafting, negotiating, and supporting dispute resolution across a wide range of activities of the department, including procurement, contracts (and memoranda of understanding), real property, intellectual property, and management of some commercial litigation.
  • Assurance & Risk is responsible for enterprise risk management, internal and external audit liaison, assurance monitoring and business continuity. The team also supports the Performance and Risk Committee of Executive Board and the independent Audit and Risk Committee.
  • Integrity is responsible for integrity framework and reporting, enterprise fraud and corruption control policies, public interest disclosures, conflict of interest management, and the Insider Threat Program.

The key duties of the position include
THE OPPORTUNITY
Legal & Assurance Branch is seeking high performing APS 5, APS 6 and Executive Level 1 Legal Officers and Senior Legal Officers to fill vacancies in the Public Law and Commercial Law teams.
Core duties will include:
  • promoting and managing relationships with internal and external stakeholders including senior executives.
  • working collaboratively within the team, other enabling functions in Finance, internal clients, and stakeholders.

For the Public Law team, we are seeking:
  • lawyers with skills and experience relevant to administrative law, including privacy and FOI, who can draft practical and technically sound legal advice, reflecting a proper understanding of Finance's operations and strategic environment.

For the Commercial Law team, we are seeking:
  • experienced commercial lawyers who are able to provide legal advice and drafting that is practical and technically sound, reflecting a clear understanding of Finance's operations and strategic environment.

In addition, core duties at the Executive Level 1 level may include:
  • managing staff to deliver aspects of complex advising matters.
  • contributing to the leadership of the team and stewardship of a positive and supportive culture.
