About UsThe Tasmanian Aboriginal Legal Service (TALS) is a community-controlled Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Legal Service (ATSILS) delivering high-quality, culturally safe legal assistance and wraparound supports across Tasmania. We specialise in criminal, civil, family and child safety law, and we advocate for systemic change through policy and law reform.
Our Family Violence and Prevention Legal Service (FVPLS), SiS Tasmania (SiS) , supports Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander victim-survivors with trauma-informed, holistic legal services.
Together, TALS and SiS are committed to justice, safety, and self-determination for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in Tasmania.
The Opportunity: Treasurer – Specialist Director (Finance)As a Specialist (Non-Member) Director skilled in finance, you will play a key governance role and provide high-level financial oversight and guidance to help us achieve our strategic goals.
You will work alongside a committed Board made up of community-elected and independent members, and collaborate closely with the CEO and leadership team.
Key Responsibilities- Oversee and advise on TALS’ financial performance, planning, and reporting
- Support the development, review, and monitoring of annual budgets
- Guide financial risk management and compliance
- Chair or contribute to finance-related subcommittees and audits
- Participate fully in Board deliberations, strategy reviews, and key governance decisions
- Foster good governance and a positive Board culture
- Help build financial capacity across the organisation
- Has 8+ years of experience in finance , accounting, or financial management
- Holds a director qualification and understands Board responsibilities
- Brings strategic insight and practical financial acumen to organisational governance
- Can actively engage in Board discussions with integrity, curiosity, and courage
- Understands or is willing to learn about the cultural and social realities impacting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities in Tasmania
- Is committed to ethical, transparent, and culturally safe leadership
- Holds (or is eligible to obtain) a Director ID and registration to work with vulnerable people
