Southern Gulf NRM (SGNRM) is a not-for-profit community-based company responsible for planning and implementation of sustainable Natural Resource Management (NRM) in the southern Gulf of Carpentaria region of North West Queensland.

The Southern Gulf region covers 215,000 square kilometres and comprises the catchments of the Flinders-Cloncurry, Leichhardt, Gregory-Nicholson Rivers, Settlement Creek and Mornington Inlet, and the Wellesley Islands.

Programs are delivered collaboratively with a range of stakeholders including all levels of government, industry groups, Traditional Owners, and conservation groups

PURPOSE OF POSITION

This role develops and implements programs that address priority issues and will achieve sustainable agriculture outcomes in the Southern Gulf NRM. The SAF role will be the designated central contact point for landholders, industry and community groups and will aim to support climate-smart sustainable agriculture practices in the Southern Gulf. The scope of the SAF is to: 1. Engage and inform farmers, landholders, community groups, and agriculture industries within their NRM region about climate-smart, sustainable agriculture practices – including best practice natural resource management, biodiversity and carbon markets, and practices that support emission reductions and build climate resilience on-farm. 2. Facilitate partnerships and connections that will assist farmers, landholders, community groups and agriculture industries to work together. 3. Support the delivery of sustainable agriculture projects in their region.

KEY DUTIES AND ACCOUNTABILITIES

(a) Facilitate partnerships and connections with organisations and landholders, Indigenous groups, Federal and State government, conversation and agricultural sector, community groups and other groups as required to promote and implement best practice agricultural practices to achieve sustainable outcomes.

(b) Coordinate project activities, timelines and resources effectively and ensure required planning and reporting is undertaken as per Government requirements in conjunction with the support of the team and supervisor

(c) Provide regular reporting to the management team on work completed and key activities underway

(d) Identify potential funding for community based sustainable agriculture groups and assist in the development of applications for funding from government, philanthropic and corporate funding sources

(e) Encourage and support sustainable agriculture outcomes by providing property management planning, capacity building activities and adoption of sustainable farm practices

(f) Participating as required in work groups to promote the region as you raise awareness of the community opportunities for engagement in NRM initiatives

SELECTION CRITERIA

Appointment to the position will be based on the following selection criteria.

Essential

1. Sound knowledge of land management concepts, principles and procedures related to sustainable land management and natural resource management

2. Demonstrated experience and success in working with landholders and community based committees and organisations, including with Indigenous communities and organisations

3. High level of organisational skills to facilitate workshops and field days and time management to meet conflicting deadlines

4. Proven high level of written and oral communication skills incorporating consultation and negotiation skills and the abilities of integrity, tact and maintenance of ethical conduct with community groups and landholders

5. Demonstrated experience and understanding of project financial management, reporting and monitoring, including reporting to Government standards

6. Proven initiative and demonstrated ability to work autonomously and as an effective team member, meet deadlines and establish work priorities and achieve quality outcomes

7. Demonstrated ability and/or understanding to seek funding that delivers program objectives and ability to identify key agencies and stakeholders in the region

Desirable

8. Knowledge of workplace health and safety principles and practice

9. Knowledge of natural resource management principles and practice

ADDITIONAL FACTORS

Initiative, flexibility and problem-solving abilities, and a personal commitment to attaining high work standards are important attributes for success in this role. A drivers’ licence and the ability to work flexible hours will be required for this role has frequent remote area travel.

GENERAL CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

This is a full-time position (38 hours per week) but alternative arrangements could be negotiated.

The position is employed under the Southern Gulf NRM standard terms and conditions of employment.

Rent assistance

Rent assistance of up to $5,200 per annum (pro‐rata) may be available to employees of Southern Gulf NRM under the relevant policy.

Relocation Assistance

Full or partial reimbursement of reasonable relocation expenses is available by agreement.

Leave

Five (5) weeks annual leave with 17.5% loading is available pro-rata. Up to 10 days study leave and negotiated financial assistance for approved relevant study pro-rata. Other leave provisions are detailed in Southern Gulf NRM Employee Policy Manual.

Superannuation

Payment of an amount equivalent to 12% of the employee’s salary to an eligible fund of the employee’s choice.

Vehicle

A vehicle will be available for work use when required.

Location

The position is located in the Southern Gulf NRM office at Mount Isa. We would consider anywhere in the Southern Gulf NRM region, Queensland. From time to time, travel to sites elsewhere in the Southern Gulf NRM region will be required that may include multiple nights away from home. Travel within the region is by car, often involving trips of multiple hours. From time to time after hours travel will be necessary.

Private Practice/Conflict of Interest

The successful applicant will not be permitted to engage in any trade, profession or business, which would be in conflict with the duties of his/her office. Potential employees must declare conflicts of interest prior to commencement and if any arises during the course of employment.

Southern Gulf NRM provides a smoke free work environment.

Driver’s License

A current Provisional or Open (manual) Driver’s license is essential to this position.
