Are you interested in supporting children in care to effectively transition into their first years of education and achieve educational success? The South East Region Student Protection Team is seeking two Principal Education Officers, for Students in Care (PEO SIC) to collaborate with schools and Child Safety Officers and partners to maximise engagement and deliver meaningful education pathways for Students in Care. The Principal Education Officers, for Students in Care will partner with the South East Region Early Childhood team to develop Tailored Transition plans and Education Support Plans for children in care who are enrolling in kindy or prep in 2026. The Principal Education Officers, for Students in Care will support the development and maintenance of cross-agency partnerships and provide specialist operational advice on the delivery of the Students in Care program.

Requirements Of Your Role

  • Provide specialist operational advice to Early Childhood Services, school and regional staff on the delivery of evidence based early years transition practices to support effective planning and engagement that are consistent with a state-wide model to maximise learning days and deliver meaningful early education pathways for Students in Care.
  • Support the development and maintenance of cross-agency partnerships including working collaboratively in relation to supporting the education needs of Students in Care


The Student Protection Team is based at Hope Island and the PEO's will report to the Principal Advisor Student Protection.

Responsibilities Include

  • Providing strategic advice to assist in planning for the use of resources to facilitate the equitable delivery of services to Students in Care across the region based on a state-wide service delivery model which is consistent with the department's framework.
  • Providing specialist operational advice to early childhood services, schools, regional staff and senior officers on the delivery of the Students in Care program including the distribution of resources and the development of monitoring mechanisms to support the Students in Care program.
  • Develop and maintain strategic and innovative partnerships across government, with early childhood services, school communities, and community organisations to ensure all Students in Care achieve quality educational outcomes and partnership initiatives are inclusive of the needs and aspirations of these students.
  • Promote and monitor programs and practices that effectively meet the needs of Students in Care, including Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students, students with learning difficulties, students with disability, poor mental health and those who are geographically isolated.
  • Oversee and manage regional Education Support Funding Programs for children in the early years, by monitoring completion rates, school disciplinary absences and exemptions for Students in Care; and representing the department at regional interagency meetings.


A strong understanding of Early Years development, Trauma Informed Practices, evidence based transition practices and the Child Protection system is highly desirable.
