South East Regional Hospital (SERH) is a newly built, architecturally designed hospital in Bega with expansive views of the Bega Valley. It is 429 kilometres South of Sydney, 228 kilometres from Canberra or 174 kilometres from the NSW snow fields. Nearby Merimbula (32 kilometres) offers a regional airport with daily flights to Sydney and Melbourne. With many beautiful coastal towns, national parks, snow fields and beaches within a short driving distance, it is the perfect location for those looking to for a family-friendly area with great work-life balance. There are many outdoor activities to enjoy including fishing, hiking, swimming, camping, walking, mountain biking and whale watching to just name a few. For young families looking to relocate to the region, there is the newly established Welcome Experience to help with finding work for spouses, schooling, childcare and integration into the local community.

South East Regional Hospital is the regional referral centre for the expansive south coast regions from Bateman's Bay to Cooma and down past the Victorian border to Mallacoota. The state of the art hospital is equipped with 3 operating theatres, ICU, 5 inpatient wards and outpatient services. There is also a dedicated office for the Orthopaedic registrars as well as a shared JMO lounge. Rural unaccredited trainees will also be eligible to apply for scholarships through HETI to help with attending courses and conferences. Fully furnished shared accommodation is usually provided to registrars by the hospital.

What You'll Be Doing

The Orthopaedic Unaccredited Trainee is responsible for the day-to-day management of the Orthopaedic inpatients, providing an on-call service for SERH plus 3 surrounding hospitals within the health district. There is a good mix of elective and emergency operating with approximately 1200 operations performed annually. The unaccredited trainee will be responsible for the supervision the resident medical officer as well as rotating medical students from the ANU Medical School.

The Orthopaedic Department is staffed by 3 unaccredited trainee registrars and 1 AOA accredited trainee registrar with a regular 1 in 4 on-call rosters with occasional 1 in 3 on-calls during periods of leave. The well-supported unit allows unaccredited trainees to gain a well-rounded experience in Orthopaedics. The job allows registrars to rotate daily through being on-call, managing acute orthopaedic emergencies, elective and emergency operating lists and outpatient clinics. There are a wide range of educational activities on offer including regular journal clubs, weekly X-ray meetings, teaching, quarterly Morbidity and Mortality meetings and the opportunity to take on research projects. This position would suit both an experienced registrar looking to hone their operative skills with a view to apply for the AOA Training Program or a junior registrar looking for a well-balanced introduction into Orthopaedic Surgery.

Selection Criteria

  • MBBS or equivalent, currently registered with the Medical Board of Australia in an appropriate registration category
  • Demonstrated ability to complete rotations as allocated and required
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently within a supervised complex clinical environment utilising excellent clinical skills, judgement and expertise
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively within multi-disciplinary teams, including the sharing of appropriate information internally and externally with key persons or services
  • Demonstrated excellent verbal, written and interpersonal skills, with the capacity to vary communication style in line with the understanding of the needs of diverse audiences
  • Demonstrated ability to prioritise workloads and display a flexible approach to meet changing situations in a demanding and unpredictable clinical environment
  • Demonstrated ongoing commitment to further self-education and professional development
  • At least three years' post graduate experience in public hospital service (or equivalent)

Occupational Assessment, Screening and Vaccination against Specific Diseases

This is a Category ‘A’ position, please read and understand NSW Health policy directive . All new employees must agree to comply with the requirements outlined in this policy. OASV requirements also include proof of vaccination against influenza and is compulsory for NSW Staff that enter any Residential Aged Care Facility (RACF) or who work in NSW Health owned and operated RACFs.
