The Executive Director, Communications and Engagement will be responsible for developing and implementing a strategic and integrated communication function for the department.

The Position Will Lead The Following Work Streams, Including Providing The Central Point For Key Strategic Work Across The Department Including

  • the independent racing review
  • development of the new sport strategy
  • whole of Games coordination and engagement in the lead up to Brisbane 2032


The Executive Director is to provide high level leadership particularly by working collaboratively with the Director-General, the portfolio’s statutory authorities, Ministerial staff and internal and external stakeholders.

The Executive Director, Communications and Engagement requires an ability to lead, manage and monitor media and strategic communication to deliver government priorities along with excellence in customer-based service delivery.

This role directly influences the delivery of government programs through the identification and development of effective methods of communicating and engaging with internal and external target audiences, in line with whole-of‐government and departmental strategic directions – your leadership will ensure the provision of accurate and timely material to help showcase the work of the department and to have some fun in the process.

Some Of The Responsibilities Of The Executive Director Include

  • Leading the Communications and Engagement branch by providing strong and effective leadership and ensuring teams adopt a high performing, trusted, service-driven, positive culture attitude.
  • Demonstrating strong business acumen and project management skills with the ability to direct multiple complex communications and engagement projects using innovative work practices.
  • Actively adopting a digital first' approach to all projects and introduce innovative work practices across the branch, and where suitable, the department, to ensure the branch is delivering effectively and efficiently.
  • Leading the development, implementation and integrity of the department's narrative, reputation and brand to ensure activities align with the department's strategic objectives.
  • Providing high-level advice to the Minister's Office, Director-General, Deputy Directors-General and other departmental staff on strategic communications, stakeholder engagement and media/issues management matters.


What We Are Looking For

Your suitability for this role will be assessed against the Executive stream of the Leadership competencies for Queensland framework and the context of the role accountabilities and is based on how you:

  • Lead Strategically – demonstrate ability to manage an integrated communication and engagement function, developing policies, processes and frameworks to ensure activities align with the department's strategic objectives
  • Make insightful decisions – demonstrate ability to identify and manage emerging communications, stakeholder engagement and media issues, grasp new concepts, undertake risk management assessments, and determine appropriate solutions to protect and enhance the reputation of the department.
  • Build enduring relationships – build and maintain effective relationships across the Senior and Executive Leadership teams, the Office of the DG and the Minister's Office. Engage with key stakeholders, target audiences, advisory bodies and industry bodies to enable the successful marketing of departmental programs and services.
  • Drive accountability and outcomes – demonstrate accountability for the execution and quality of results through professionalism, persistence and transparency. Have extensive experience and a record of achievement in leading communications and engagement strategies for departmental initiatives and programs to support the department's vision and strategic direction.
  • Demonstrate sound governance – maintain a high standard of practice through governance and risk management.
  • Will contribute to the department's commitment to equity, diversity, respect, and inclusion.
