Established in 2007 by the Australian and NSW Governments, NICM Health Research Institute (NICM) is internationally recognised for its leadership in integrative and complementary medicine research, translation, and policy. As one of the largest research facilities of its kind in the Western world, NICM produces evidence-based research well above world standard and works closely with government and industry to improve patient outcomes. Located at Western Sydney University’s Westmead campus, NICM integrates traditional Chinese medicine, Indigenous bush medicine, and other traditional practices with rigorous pharmacological and clinical research to advance patient-centred care.
The Opportunity
Are you a strategic leader in clinical research with a passion for complementary medicine and therapies? NICM is seeking an accomplished academic to join the professoriate as a Principal Fellow, Clinical Research. In this prestigious role, you will shape the strategic direction of NICM’s clinical trials program and provide academic leadership across teaching, research, and engagement. You will mentor emerging early-career researchers and contribute to a vibrant, inclusive work culture.
As Principal Fellow, you will make substantial leadership contributions, including:
- Guiding the strategic direction of NICM’s clinical trials program, with a focus on infrastructure, implementation, and innovation in complementary medicine and therapies.
This is a full-time, fixed-term opportunity for 5 years based at Westmead Campus, although travel to other campuses of the University may be required.

About You
You are a strategic academic leader with a PhD in Medicine or a related field. You have a strong track record in the clinical trial lifecycle from protocol design to successful delivery. Your research is internationally recognised, supported by competitive funding acquisition, high-impact publications, and collaborative networks. You bring extensive experience in supervising HDR candidates and mentoring early-career researchers, alongside a commitment to excellence in teaching. You’re skilled at building partnerships across government, industry, and the profession to drive innovation, and you’re passionate about translating research into real-world impact. With excellent communication and leadership skills, you foster a positive, inclusive, and collaborative work culture.
