As the Legal Officer, you will assist the Principal Legal Officer to provide legal advice and assistance to the Public Guardian (and her delegates) in relation to the discharge of the Public Guardian’s statutory functions and exercise of their statutory powers.The Office of the Public Guardian (OPG) is an independent statutory office established to protect the rights and interests of adults with impaired decision making capacity, and children and young people in the child protection system and other visitable sites.

Key Responsibilities
- Undertake research and provide advice to the Principle Legal Officer on issues of law, policy and practice relating to the rights and interests of adults with impaired decision-making capacity and children and young people in the child protection system and other visitable sites.
- Assist in the delivery of legal services to the Public Guardian and their delegates, including:
- Preparing and drafting complex documentation, responses and submissions and briefs to Counsel.
- Responding to high priority external requests for information (e.g. Coroners Court, subpoenas and notices to produce).
- Managing Right to Information and Information Privacy matters.
- Review and provide feedback on strategic legislative/policy development/reform issues, OPG operational practice development and centralised data exchanges/information sharing proposals including Memorandums of Understanding.
- Review and maintain organisational delegations.
- Attend and appear in litigation events and tribunal/court appearances on behalf of the Public Guardian.
- Build and sustain positive relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
- Ensure all work complies with data entry and reporting requirements and meets all other corporate and professional responsibilities.
A degree in law from a recognised tertiary institution is required to perform this role and you must either be admitted, or are eligible for immediate admission, as a legal practitioner in Queensland.
Preference will be given to applicants with a minimum of 2 years post-admission professional experience in relevant areas of law.
