If you're a good communicator and enjoy achieving positive outcomes, you have the qualities needed to become a prison officer.

There are no specific qualifications needed, but you must be an Australian or NZ citizen or hold Australian permanent residency. You must also hold an Australian driver's licence (minimum P2).

About the role

Prison officers are essential to the operation of the prison and play a key part in the success of our prisoner rehabilitation programs. Your work will be dynamic, and every day will be different. You will:

  • Be a positive influence on prisoners
  • Support prisoner rehabilitation through case management
  • Protect the safety and security of staff and prisoners

Most people in custody return to the community, and the focus of a prison officer is to create opportunities for them to make better decisions.

It's a challenging yet rewarding role and is considered one of the best kept secrets in all of Victoria.

NEW $8,000 sign-on bonus

New prison officers are now eligible for a bonus of up to $8,000. Six months after commencing, you will receive a payment of $4,000. Then, after one year's full-time employment, you will receive an additional payment of $4,000. Conditions apply, see website for details.
