The Role
As Design Manager, you will lead and coordinate the design development of large-scale renewable energy projects, including solar, wind, and energy storage systems. You will oversee multidisciplinary design teams, ensuring all project designs comply with technical requirements, Australian standards, and International and local regulations. Acting as the key interface between the internal design team, clients, and contractors, you will manage design reviews, Safety in Design workshops, provide strategic direction, and ensure technical excellence throughout the project lifecycle.
In this role, you will play a critical part in shaping utility-scale renewable projects across the Pacific region, from feasibility through to delivery. You will provide high-level technical and design management expertise to maximise performance and compliance with Australian Standards and local regulations.
Duties and responsibilities:
- Lead and coordinate the development of concept, and detailed designs for solar, wind, and BESS projects.
- Manage design reviews and ensure alignment with project objectives, technical requirements, and compliance with Australian standards and statutory regulations.
- Direct and mentor engineers and design teams, fostering knowledge sharing and maintaining design consistency across projects.
- Collaborate with project managers, design teams and subcontractors to deliver integrated project outcomes.
- Coordinate and lead Safety in design workshops related to detailed designs activities.
- Provide design leadership during procurement, construction, and commissioning phases, including site inspections and technical support.
- Act as Owner’s Engineer or technical advisor for clients, ensuring design integrity and compliance throughout project delivery.
- Engage regularly with clients and stakeholders, delivering technical presentations, reports, and design progress briefings.
- Stay abreast of emerging renewable technologies, digital design tools, and best practices, and integrate innovative approaches into project solutions.
Qualifications and Experience
Knowledge
- Knowledge of PV, BESS, and wind energy technologies, including design principles and performance optimisation.
- Familiarity with EPC/O&M contract structures and their implications for design management.
- Proficient with industry design and modelling software (e.g., PVSyst, HOMER Pro, AutoCAD).
- Solid understanding of Australian Standards relating to Utility Renewable projects.
- Excellent coordination, stakeholder management, and communication skills.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in engineering or related field
- Post graduate qualification in Renewable Energy, Project Management or related field preferable
Experience
- 6+ years of experience delivering utility-scale renewable projects (solar, wind, BESS) in Australia.
- Proven track record in managing design teams, and contractors in multi-disciplinary project environments.
- Demonstrated background in large utility renewables projects in the developer, EPC, or technical advisory space.
