The Environmental Health team safeguards public health by monitoring food safety and wastewater standards. They inspect and regulate businesses, and onsite wastewater systems, while investigating health-related complaints such as noise, asbestos and woodfire smoke. Through compliance, education, and enforcement, they ensure a safe and healthy environment for the community.

The Opportunity

The Environmental Health Officer ensures compliance with public health legislation by inspecting food businesses, caravan parks and accommodation premises. The role involves processing registrations and permits, investigating health-related complaints such as noise, woodfire smoke, and wastewater complaints, and taking enforcement action where necessary. Officers also provide advice to the community and businesses, support public health in emergency management, and contribute to programs that protect and promote community wellbeing. Working across Lakes Entrance and Bairnsdale, this position plays a key role in safeguarding health standards throughout East Gippsland.

Key Responsibilities Include

  • Inspect and monitor compliance of food businesses, beauty premises, caravan parks and accommodation premises,
  • Process registrations and permits for food premises, health premises and onsite wastewater systems.
  • Investigate health-related complaints such as noise, woodsmoke, wastewater, and other public health nuisances.
  • Enforce legislative requirements by issuing notices, directions, and infringements where non-compliance is identified.
  • Provide advice and education to businesses and the community on public health standards and requirements.

  • Technical Capability

Bachelor of Health Science (Public and Environmental Health) or equivalent.

Qualification as an Environmental Health Officer, eligible to be a member of Environmental Health Professionals Australia.
