Responsibilities

The Youth Detention Operational Support team is responsible for supporting best practice youth detention service delivery in Queensland. Key activities of the team include:

  • providing practice support for staff, stakeholders and services working with young people in youth detention centres
  • administering a range of statutory, corporate and operational reporting functions
  • developing operational policy and procedures and providing high level input into legislative reform, and
  • working on complex projects aimed at improving operational service delivery in youth detention centres.


As Senior Practice Officer, Youth Detention Operational Support you will specifically:

  • Identify, research, develop, and analyse operational and practice issues and work as part of a team to develop evidence based operational policy and practice solutions.
  • Prepare advice on current practice, relevant operational policy implications, legislation and programs, including reports, briefings and ministerial correspondence.
  • Lead, plan, implement and monitor progress of major projects within tight timeframes to achieve desired outcomes working directly with youth detention staff and executive management.
  • Liaise and consult with other teams and with various other areas within the department to identify practice issues and to develop practical operational solutions.
  • Represent and negotiate on behalf of the team in internal discussions and relevant internal working groups about the development of practice initiatives and major youth detention-based projects that enhance and develop current practices.
  • Provide high level expert advice and information to the Manager, Director and other key stakeholders pertaining to complex youth justice service delivery issues and trends and presenting information for service delivery consideration, inclusive of advice pertaining to evidence-based practice and legislation interpretation.
  • Demonstrate cultural capability and/or a commitment to developing cultural capability to ensure an inclusive culture that aligns with the Human Rights Act 2019 and supports departmental programs and community partnerships aimed at preserving cultural connections for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
