We are seeking an experienced Lawyer to join our Litigation unit in the Brisbane CBD office with a passion for environmental law. The Litigation unit conducts enforcement and compliance litigation work on behalf of the department and other government departments, including prosecutions and appeals against decisions in relation to environmental matters, including Planning and Environment Court and Land Court appeals.You will ideally have more than three years post admission experience. It will be advantageous if your experience relates to litigation and advice work in a regulatory environment and if you have experience in conducting criminal and civil court proceedings. The responsibilities of a PO3 Lawyer are exercised with respect to matters, which are of a moderate to high level of seriousness and complexity.
- Provide a high quality and timely legal service with respect to the compliance and enforcement of Queensland's environmental legislation including the Environmental Protection Act 1994, Nature Conservation Act 1992, Queensland Heritage Act 1992 and Marine Parks Act 2004
- Appear at mentions, reviews, and hearings before the Land Court, Planning and Environment Court and occasionally QCAT.
- Conduct criminal proceedings in the lower and superior courts.
- Brief counsel on more complex criminal and civil matters.
- Take part in court ordered mediations and without prejudice conferences.
- Have carriage of and manage of all aspects of individual litigation files.
- Prepare correspondence including Ministerial briefing notes and recommendations.
- Comply with the Queensland Public Service and professional codes of conduct, ethical duties and responsibilities.
- Maintain accurate file management and record keeping.
- Foster a workplace culture that supports and promotes the interests of First Nations people and actively engage through our work to contribute to better outcomes for First Nations people.
