SOL STUDIOS
Melbourne Full-day Temporary

Description:

Web Designer (Design Only, No Dev) | Project-Based - Full-Time Path | SOL Studios

Location: Remote (Australia-based)

Type: Project-based with clear path to full-time employment

Compensation: $60,000–$95,000+ per year (scaling with volume and transition to salary)

About SOL Studios

SOL Studios is a digital studio specialising in custom web design and development for Australian businesses.

We build digital hubs - conversion-focused websites designed to connect every touchpoint of a business and drive measurable results. Our clients come to us because they understand their website is a long-term business asset, not a quick marketing fix.

We work with modern frameworks, custom code, and AI-assisted workflows. Projects are scoped properly, delivered with clarity, and built to scale.

The Role

This is a design-only role. You will NOT be developing or building websites.

We're looking for a designer to own the design phase of client projects. You design in Figma, hand off to our development team, and move on to the next project.

What you'll be doing:

  • Designing layouts, prototypes, and UI/UX in Figma (design only - no coding required)
  • Creating responsive web designs for multi-page sites, landing pages, and eCommerce builds
  • Delivering design systems, component libraries, and asset exports ready for development handoff
  • Occasionally presenting design decisions to clients
  • Collaborating with our development team to ensure seamless handoffs

What We're Looking For

Required:

  • 3–6 years professional design experience (UI/UX for web)
  • Strong portfolio showing genuine design craft (not template customisation work)
  • Proficiency in Figma
  • Understanding of responsive design, accessibility, and conversion-focused design
  • Australian-based and available for remote collaboration

Bonus (not required):

  • Formal design education
  • Basic HTML/CSS knowledge or interest in learning to code
  • Familiarity with WordPress, Bricks, or Webflow
  • Experience working in small studios or agencies

Portfolio requirement:

Your application must include links to at least 2 full websites you've designed, with a short note on your role and design process.

Important: If you're a developer who also designs, or identify as a "web designer/developer," that's fine - but this role is design only. Development is handled by our team.

Compensation Structure

Project-based rates (examples):

  • One-page landing page: $300–$400
  • Multi-page site (3–6 pages): $600–$800
  • Mid-sized site (7–12 pages): $900–$1,200
  • Large site (12–20 pages): $1,400–$1,800
  • eCommerce or complex builds: $1,800–$2,500

Payment terms:

50% on project start, 50% on final design handoff.

Volume trajectory:

  • Months 1–3: 2–3 projects/month (~$3,000/month)
  • Months 4–9: 4–6 projects/month (~$6,000/month)
  • Months 10–12+: Transition to full-time salary ($85k–$95k) or continue project-based with guaranteed volume
Incentives

Revision efficiency bonus:

+5% project fee if final design is approved within 2 revision rounds.

Retention bonus:

  • After 6 months: $1,500
  • After 12 months: $3,000 + salary negotiation or guaranteed monthly project volume

Referral bonus:

$500 for referring another quality designer who completes 3 projects with SOL.

How to Apply

Applications handled directly via LinkedIn.

Your application must include:

  • Links to at least 2 full websites you've designed
  • A short note on your role in each (design process, deliverables, outcomes)
  • Why you're interested in joining SOL Studios

Applications without a portfolio will not be considered.

The first 3 projects serve as a mutual assessment period at standard rates. After 3 projects, we'll discuss ongoing commitment and lock in guaranteed monthly minimums.
