The Opportunity
As a Technical Officer, you will:
- Operate within the Postharvest Commodity Protection Program and be responsible for day-to-day management of bioassay experiments aligned with the research milestones in a three-year GRDC-funded research project titled “Optimising post fumigation protocols for phosphine, aligning to new health and safety standards and reducing post-farmgate costs to growers”.
- Assist the project leader and other research staff in project planning, organise grain commodities and other experimental materials, and undertake fumigation experiments following the contracted project milestones.
- Collate research data, their statistical analyses and presentation in required format to the project leader.
- Collaborate with other Technical Officers to maintain sensitive equipment such as gas chromatographs.
- Establish protocols regarding safe storage and handling of chemicals and updating of laboratory practices related to grain protection research involving fumigants and grain protectant chemicals.

- Technical experience in the area of postharvest commodity protection, particularly in bioassay methods related to evaluation of grain protectants and fumigants against pests of stored commodities as outlined below:
- Well acquainted with stored product insect pests, their culturing and maintenance of healthy and disease-free colonies, ensuring their continuous supply for a range of laboratory and field experiments.
- Technical expertise in a range of bioassay methods to evaluate the effectiveness of grain protectants and fumigants (phosphine and sulfuryl fluoride) against target pests of stored commodities.
- Significant experience in evaluation of fumigant data collected from sorption desorption bioassays of phosphine involving a range of grain commodities, their statistical analyses and scientific reporting.
- Knowledge of chemical formulations of grain protectant and their dilution methods for grain treatment, handling and maintenance of sensitive equipment such as gas chromatographs.
What We Are Looking For
