Job Description

James Cook University is seeking an accomplished and strategic leader to take on the role of Head, Media and Communications . This pivotal senior position will drive the University’s profile and influence through impactful media and communications initiatives

  • Full-time position
  • Fixed term for 5 years
  • Based at the picturesque Townsville Bebegu Yumba campus, Douglas in tropical North Queensland

About The Role

The Head, Media and Communications provides strategic leadership for the University’s internal and external media relations, shaping and delivering media strategies that enhance the visibility of JCU’s research, teaching and community engagement while strengthening the University’s reputation. Working closely with the University Executive and Senior Management Group, you will lead proactive and responsive media engagement, deliver strategic campaigns, manage crisis and incident responses, and build strong relationships with media outlets in the region and beyond. You will also lead a small, high-performing media and communications team, ensuring the delivery of timely, high-quality outcomes aligned to the University’s strategic objectives.

Qualifications, Skills And Experience

You will bring qualifications in media or a related field and extensive relevant experience, along with a strong track record of developing and implementing media strategies within large, complex organisations. You are highly experienced in managing media campaigns, advising senior leaders, and operating effectively under pressure in complex and sensitive situations. With exceptional written, verbal and interpersonal communication skills, you are confident engaging with a wide range of stakeholders and media contacts, and you are a proven people leader who delivers results through an engaged and high-performing team.
