Join QBuild for an exciting career opportunity as the temporary Director of Business Capability for 6 months. This role is responsible for driving strategic initiatives and operational excellence in recruitment, apprenticeships, and learning and development. The role ensures the delivery of innovative, inclusive and future-focused workforce solutions to build organisational capability, attract and retain talent, and foster a culture of continuous learning and professional growth.

QBuild is a commercialised business unit of the Queensland Government. It has been Queensland Government's builder for over 160 years, playing an important role in communities across the state by building and maintaining government-owned assets such as schools, social housing, police stations and correctional and health facilities.

About The Role

You will play a pivotal role in supporting QBuild's ambition to strengthen Queensland's building and construction industry by driving strategic initiatives and operational excellence in recruitment, apprenticeships, and learning and development.

Duties And Skills Involved

  • Leading a high-performing team to deliver innovative and effective recruitment, apprenticeship, and learning and development programs that align with government priorities, legislative requirements, and the department's strategic objectives.
  • Driving innovative, contemporary, equitable, and efficient recruitment and learning and development strategies to attract and retain a diverse and skilled workforce especially across the trade sector.
  • Fostering a culture of innovation, collaboration, and inclusion within geographically dispersed team and across the department.
  • Leading a world class apprentice program, ensuring high completion rates, transition to trade programs, and an apprentice workforce that strengthens diversity across trades.
  • Leading, monitoring and reporting on the performance of business capability programs and initiatives, ensuring alignment with key performance indicators.
  • Preparing timely and well researched advice, briefings, reports, and submissions.
  • Providing expert advice to senior leaders and stakeholders on business and workforce capability trends, risks, and opportunities.
  • Working effectively as part of a senior leadership team, building organisational capacity and delivering agreed strategic objectives, including sourcing professional expertise within and from outside the department.
  • Promoting a positive workplace culture through initiatives that support wellbeing, engagement, and professional development.


Additional Requirements

  • Demonstrated ability to develop and implement long-term workforce capability strategies and initiatives that align with organisational goals and government priorities.
  • Proven ability to lead and inspire teams, foster collaboration, build a cohesive and supportive team environment, and drive a culture of high performance and innovation.
  • Demonstrated strong interpersonal and communication skills to build and maintain productive relationships with internal and external stakeholders, influence outcomes, and manage complex stakeholder environments.
  • Experience in providing expert advice to executive and senior leaders and stakeholders on business and workforce capability related trends, risks and opportunities that are supported by a clear rationale, using analysis, experience, and judgment.
  • Demonstrated strong understanding of public sector legislation, policies and frameworks, with a commitment to ethical and transparent decision-making.
