Assistant Director-General, Executive Services - Office of the Director-General

Queensland Government
Brisbane Full-day Full-time

Description:

  • Shape system-wide governance, performance and executive decision-making.
  • Provide trusted strategic advice at the heart of Queensland’s education system.
  • Lead complex policy, legal, media and executive coordination functions at scale.

The Department of Education is driven by a bold vision to ensure high quality learning for every young Queenslander. Committed to delivering responsive services that strengthen communities and improve outcomes for children and young people, the Department is seeking a senior executive leader to play a pivotal role at the centre of its decision-making and governance architecture.

About The Role

As Assistant Director-General, Executive Services, you will operate at the strategic core of one of Queensland's largest and most complex public sector portfolios. Reporting directly to the Director-General, this role is far more than executive coordination, it is a critical leadership position responsible for ensuring the integrity, quality and coherence of governance, performance, policy, legal and executive processes that enable the Department to deliver on its priorities.

You will provide authoritative, high-level advice to the Director-General and Minister, supporting informed decision-making across Cabinet, intergovernmental and whole-of-government forums. With oversight of governance, planning, reporting, policy coordination, legal and administrative law, media, and First Nations policy advice, you will ensure complex issues are synthesised into clear, timely and strategic recommendations at the highest levels of government. At the heart of this role is influence and judgement. You will steward critical relationships across central agencies, statutory bodies, national education forums and key stakeholders, representing the Department in high-stakes negotiations and matters of significant public interest. You will maintain strategic oversight of emerging risks, sensitive incidents and media issues, ensuring the Director-General is supported with clear insight and options in fast-moving and complex environments.

This role also supports the integration of equity and accountability considerations into executive decision-making. The Assistant Director-General will provide oversight and coordination of advice on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander education matters, ensuring this advice is appropriately governed, aligned with Queensland Government priorities, and integrated into broader departmental policy, performance and reporting frameworks. This function is delivered through close collaboration with specialist teams and senior leaders across the Department, with responsibility for ensuring high-quality advice is escalated to the Director-General in a timely, coherent and system-wide context.

As a senior leader, you will foster a high-performing, values-led culture across a diverse portfolio of functions, developing capable leaders and strengthening systems that support transparency, integrity and performance. Your leadership will directly shape how the Department anticipates challenges, responds to risk, and delivers confidence in public administration. This is a rare opportunity for an accomplished executive to work at the centre of government, where your judgement, leadership and strategic insight will directly influence the effectiveness of Queensland's education system and the outcomes it delivers for generations to come.
