Deputy Director-General

Queensland Government
Brisbane Full-day Full-time

Description:

Lead one of Queensland's largest and most complex service and regulatory portfolios, driving service transformation, regulatory reform and customer-focused justice outcomes.

  • Lead one of Queensland’s most complex public-facing service portfolios.
  • Drive regulatory reform and customer-first service transformation.
  • Candidates from a regulatory background in the private sector will be well considered.

The Deputy Director-General, Community Services and Consumer Protection, is one of the most senior and influential leadership roles within the Department of Justice.

Leading a newly established division, the role carries responsibility for a broad, high profile portfolio spanning community services, consumer protection, industry regulation, and strategic communications. The division delivers frontline services relied upon by Queenslanders every day, while also regulating sectors that are critical to the state's social and economic fabric.

This is a transformational leadership role. The Deputy Director-General will set the strategic direction for the division, modernise service delivery, streamline regulatory frameworks and lift organisational performance. A strong focus on customer experience, digital enablement and red tape reduction sits at the heart of the agenda.

With accountability for a large executive cohort and a diverse workforce, the role demands exceptional leadership capability, strong commercial and political acumen, and the ability to operate with authority in a highly visible and scrutinised environment.

This opportunity will appeal to a senior executive who thrives in complex, high impact environments and is motivated by public purpose and large-scale reform. Applications are strongly encouraged from accomplished leaders from the private sector, as well as those with public sector experience.

You will bring a proven record of senior leadership in large, complex organisations, with experience operating within regulated, customer-focused or service-driven environments. You may come from a corporate, infrastructure, professional services, financial services, utilities or highly regulated industry background, and will be comfortable navigating sophisticated governance frameworks and leading organisations through transformation. You will operate confidently at the Board, executive and ministerial levels, engaging with senior stakeholders on matters of strategic importance.

You are a contemporary, values-led leader who builds high-performing executive teams, fosters a culture of accountability and commercial discipline, and empowers people to deliver exceptional outcomes. You understand how to balance public interest, commercial realities and community expectations, and you bring strong judgement in managing risk, reputation and regulatory integrity.

Your leadership style is collaborative, inclusive and outcome-driven. You listen well, communicate with clarity and influence, and bring people with you through change. You are equally comfortable setting long-term strategy and driving operational delivery.

Above all, you are driven by impact. You want to apply your leadership experience to shaping how government serves the community, protecting consumers, supporting responsible industry and ensuring essential services are trusted, accessible and future-ready.
