The successful candidate will be required to travel to China as part of this role.


What you will do in this role:

Research

⋅ Conduct and synthesise primary and secondary research, including interviews and usability testing, to provide evidence-based recommendations.

⋅ Translate research findings into actionable design implications and communicate them effectively to cross-functional teams.


Ideation and Concept Creation

⋅ Contribute meaningful ideas in workshops, applying brand direction and consumer insight.

⋅ Produce 2D and 3D representations that clearly communicate intent and enable team discussion.

⋅ Explore prototyping methods appropriate to the project stage, testing assumptions, and gathering feedback.


Detail Design

⋅ Develop efficient CAD models and assemblies that meet mechanical, manufacturing, and compliance standards.

⋅ Manage CAD libraries, documentation, and supplier exchanges with increasing autonomy.

⋅ Apply colour, graphics, and materials knowledge to deliver product-appropriate solutions within project timelines.


User Experience

⋅ Apply consumer usability insights to guide product design choices and reduce user maintenance effort.

⋅ Develop and refine user flows that balance simplicity for beginners with flexibility for experts.

⋅ Create functional prototypes to validate hypotheses and gather feedback from stakeholders.


Validating Design Intent

⋅ Conduct structured performance and life testing with limited supervision, interpreting data to inform design decisions.

⋅ Collaborate with engineers to identify potential failure modes and propose improvements.

⋅ Ensure compliance with relevant safety standards and support testing through external labs where required.


Delivering the Design

⋅ Collaborate with suppliers to resolve tooling and production challenges, applying methods that balance aesthetics and manufacturability.

⋅ Contribute to cost tracking and assembly cost management, helping ensure designs align with commercial targets.

⋅ Lead portions of verification and validation testing, ensuring accuracy and compliance with protocols.


Manufacturing Knowledge

⋅ Apply knowledge of injection moulding, casting, and fabrication processes to ensure designs are practical and achievable.

⋅ Review DFM documents and raise risks with moderate guidance, proposing adjustments to improve manufacturability.

⋅ Select and apply appropriate joining and finishing methods, ensuring fit and finish requirements are met.


Intellectual Property

⋅ Interpret search results and define inventive features with some guidance.

⋅ Prepare accurate invention drawings and supporting documentation.


Project Skills

⋅ Engage with stakeholders by listening and capturing input, ensuring all voices are considered.

⋅ Support task sizing and sequencing in planning ceremonies, taking responsibility for assigned tasks.

⋅ Identify and escalate potential risks or blockers to senior team members.


Critical Thinking & Communication

⋅ Evaluate information and arguments, testing accuracy and reliability before forming conclusions.

⋅ Confidently articulate ideas in meetings and presentations, adapting style to different audiences.

⋅ Write clearly and succinctly to document and share outcomes with stakeholders.


Balancing Desirability, Feasibility, and Viability

⋅ Conduct research into consumer needs and communicate findings to project teams.

⋅ Identify potential imbalances between consumer expectations, cost, and execution feasibility.

⋅ Provide input into decision-making by weighing trade-offs between time, cost, and consumer appeal.


We’re Interested in Hearing from People Who Have:

  • 4-10 years experience, strong practical skills in CAD modelling, prototyping, CMF application, and design visualisation, enabling contribution across all stages of development.
  • Ability to conduct and apply user research, usability testing, and empathy-driven insights to create intuitive and high-performing product experiences.
  • Increasing autonomy in leading design tasks or streams, showing sound judgment and proactively solving design and technical challenges.
  • Comfortable working with engineers, product managers, suppliers, and manufacturing teams to ensure alignment between design intent and technical realities.
  • Capacity to define meaningful design opportunities, generate innovative solutions, and communicate them clearly through sketching, modelling, or prototyping.
  • Understanding of DFM, DFA, tooling strategies, and manufacturing constraints to support product feasibility and transition to production.
