Description:

The Chemistry Centre provides accredited analysis of water, soil, sediment and plant samples to support research and evidence-based decision making for agricultural, environmental and resource management outcomes. The Centre also provides advice on research design, sampling techniques and interpretation of analytical results.

Core areas of expertise include analytical chemistry, water chemistry, soil chemistry, sediment geochemistry and environmental tracing.

In this role, you will provide technical laboratory support services including receipting, organising and preparing samples to ensure accurate and timely delivery of analytical data. The position suits someone with experience in a high-throughput analytical laboratory environment, strong attention to detail, and well-developed organisational skills.

As a Scientific Assistant, You Will

  • Prepare reagents and solutions using volumetric apparatus, and prepare soil, plant and water samples including weighing, extraction and digestion.
  • Operate a range of laboratory equipment such as digestion blocks, digital auto burettes, autotitrators, centrifuges, electronic balances, grinders, presses, pH/EC analysers and UV/VIS spectrophotometers.
  • Calibrate laboratory equipment including balances, ovens, burettes and volumetric flasks.
  • Receive, label and register samples, allocate analyses using the Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS), enter test data and check data transcription for accuracy.
  • Compile and use simple spreadsheets to support laboratory operations.
  • Liaise with management and colleagues to review workloads and assist with prioritising laboratory tasks.
  • Provide supervision and training to peers, students and other Chemistry Centre staff in the operation of basic laboratory equipment (e.g. ovens, balances, centrifuges and soil grinders).
  • Maintain workplace health and safety standards for safe laboratory practice and ensure compliance with NATA-accredited quality assurance requirements.
  • Foster a workplace culture that supports and promotes the interests of First Nations peoples and actively contribute, through your work, to improved outcomes.

Strong communication skills, enabling you to provide responsive, accurate and relevant information to colleagues.

The ability to work effectively in a team environment, exercising tact, diplomacy and discretion, and valuing different perspectives.
